An Experienced Defense Attorney On Your Side

Trial-Tested Criminal Defense For The People Of Belleville

Facing a criminal charge is one of the most intimidating experiences that you can experience. You do not have to go through it alone – at the Law Office of Michael J. Rousseau, I am here to protect you.

I bring more than 24 years of experience as a criminal law attorney. Prior to opening my own law practice in 2004, I worked as an Assistant State’s Attorney and an Assistant Public Defender for St. Clair County. This gave me experience on both sides of the court as both a prosecutor and a defense attorney. Today, I feel honored to represent numerous clients across Southern Illinois.

A Full Range Of Illinois Criminal Law Services

I have extensive criminal defense practice. Clients come to me from across the state for help with misdemeanor and felony offenses. Just a few of the many cases I handle include:

  • Assault and battery: An action that causes or attempts to cause physical harm to another person. I help by challenging evidence, negotiating plea deals or defending you in court.
  • Domestic violence, including orders of protection: Abusive behavior in a domestic setting, often leading to protective orders against the accused. I can defend you from these orders or help you obtain one for your safety.
  • Drug offenses: The illegal possession, distribution or manufacture of drugs. As a criminal defense lawyer, I can work to suppress illegally obtained evidence or negotiate for reduced charges.
  • DUI and DWI: Driving under the influence can lead to severe penalties. I contest the validity of traffic stops or breathalyzer results to mitigate consequences.
  • Manslaughter and murder: These serious charges involve the unlawful killing of another person. I explore defenses such as self-defense or challenge the prosecution’s evidence to secure a fair trial.
  • Property crimes: Illegally taking or damaging someone else’s property. As your attorney, I can negotiate restitution agreements and fight to protect your rights.
  • Traffic violations: Breaches of traffic laws which can range from minor infractions to serious offenses. Often, I can contest tickets or reduce penalties to keep your driving record clean.
  • Weapons offenses: The illegal possession, use, or distribution of firearms or other weapons. To protect your rights, I can argue for the lawful possession of weapons or challenge the legality of weapons searches.

I also represent clients in personal injury cases and real estate litigation.
